Which physiologic need should a nurse evaluate first when using Maslow's framework?

In Maslow's hierarchy of needs, physiological needs are the most fundamental and must be prioritized before any higher-level needs. The need for air, as a vital physiological requirement, is essential for survival. Without adequate air supply, a person's ability to function is immediately compromised, making it the most urgent need for a nurse to assess.

Evaluating the need for air first ensures that the patient's basic life-sustaining functions are maintained. If air is obstructed or compromised, it can lead to severe consequences, including respiratory distress or failure, organ damage, or even death. Therefore, addressing this need takes precedence over other needs, such as safety, love and belonging, or esteem, which, while important, do not require immediate action for survival.
